The new planet is the fourth Jupiter-like world to be found around the young star HR 8799, astronomers announced today. The same team had previously found the other three planets in 20xx, when they took a direct picture of the star system.   Of the more than 500 planets discovered to date outside our solar system, most have been found via indirect methods, such as looking for planets' gravitational tugs on their host stars or for dips in starlight when planets pass in front of their hosts.   The new planet was also found in a direct image of the HR 8799 system. But based on the masses of the planets and their distances from the star, the fourth world challenges current theories of planet formation, according to the study authors.   "This is the first multiplanet system directly imaged so far, so it's quite a feat," said lead study author Christian Marois, an astronomer at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Canada.   "But we are now stuck with four planets [and] we cannot explain their formation and their current locations by any of our models."   Fourth Planet Too Close to Its Parent?   The previously known planets around HR 8799 are about five, seven, and ten times Jupiter's mass. They orbit between 2.2 billion miles (3.5 billion kilometers) from the star—roughly the same as Neptune's distance from the sun—and 6.3 billion miles (10.1 billion kilometers), or almost twice Pluto's distance.   The most distant planet circles just inside a dusty disk similar to that produced by the solar system's Kuiper belt, a region of small, icy bodies that includes Pluto.   The whole HR 8799 system is estimated to be no more than 60 million years old, so the planets are still glowing with heat from their formation. This heat signature is what betrayed the planets' positions in the previous infrared images of the star.   Astronomers found the fourth planet using the Keck II telescope on the peak of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The instrument is equipped with a special near-infrared imager and adaptive optics to eliminate the blurring effect of Earth's atmosphere.   摘要:近年来,各种大学英语听力教材纷纷涌现。文章提出在听力课堂教学中应适当地运用教材之外的课外听力材料,可以提高听力课的教学效果,同时也提高学生对听力课的满意程度。   关键词:大学英语;听力教材;课外听力材料   一、听力教材内容局限性   近年来,大学英语教学越来越重视大学生的英语能力和英语素质的提高,因此,作为英语的一项重要技能——听力,也越来越受到瞩目。这一点从大学英语教学的指挥棒——四六级考试改革中就可以窥豹一斑。在四六级考试改革后,听力的比重从改革前的20%上升到了现在的35%。因此,对于本科学生来说,提高听力既是完成大学阶段英语学习的必经过程,也是提高自身英语素质的必然需要,同时,面对越来越多的西方文化冲击和全球化的信息浪潮,拥有良好的听力能力也意味掌握了重要的信息接受渠道。   在听力教学当中,很重要的一方面就是为学生选择好合适的听力材料。如果听力材料不合适,学生会有畏难情绪,同时也会使课堂教学变得索然无味。目前大学英语听力教材已经除了传统的STEP BY STEP和LISTEN TO THIS之外,各种新的听力材料如雨后春笋般涌现,琳琅满目,生机勃勃。目前比较有影响力的主要有《大学体验英语听说教材》(高等教育出版社,大学体验英语项目组编),《大学英语听说教程》(上海外国外语教育出版社,虞苏美,李惠琴主编),《新视野大学英语听说教程》(外研社)等等。   这些教材都是根据大学英语改革的要求编写的,各有自己的特点。从形式上来说,这些材料突破了传统磁带模式,都配有光盘,有些还有视频内容。从内容来说,它们都将课程系统地分成若干单元和主题,这些单元和主题贴近校园生活,涉及新兴的网络科技,有些还有较深的内涵,能引起学生的思考和共鸣。另外,这些教材在课堂组织上方面比较注重学生实际能力的提高,强调课堂的互动,强调学生为主的自主学习,强调学生的参与等等。总体来说,这些听力教材带来鲜明的时代感,为学生和老师所乐见、所接受。   不过,在实际的应用过程中,课堂听力材料并非完美无暇,一些教材在选材、语言等方面还有不少可商榷之处。另外,在课堂组织过程中,这些教材也暴露出一些问题,给课堂组织带来一定的难题。根据统一,学生对教材和听力课堂教学反应的问题主要涵盖以下一些方面:   (1)有些单元内容重复出现,比如以Greeting(问候)为主题和Internet为主题的章节在各套教材中都存在反复出现的问题;   (2)全书难度不一致,深浅不一,学生感到还有一些章节语言太过简单,缺乏趣味性和挑战性;而有的章节语速又忽然过快,学生难以适应;   (3)有些单元选取的文章适合作为阅读材料,而并非适合是听力材料;   (4)各章节之间的难度没有呈循序渐进的原则,关联性不强;   (5)有些章节的内容趣味性不太强,内容枯燥,文字无味……等等。   总之,各种教材的涌现给大学英语教学带来了更多的选择,更新的内容,但不得不指出的是,在使用的过程中这些教材也存在着一定的问题。   二、课外听力材料的运用策略   针对出现的新情况与新问题,大学英语听力老师不应该被动地等待和接受,而是应该主动地改变和适应。笔者根据自身授课的实践和其他老师授课的经验,提出了如下的课外听力材料运用策略:   1.适当安排听抄练习。这一部分可以当成是每节课的固定内容,每次课留出15~20分钟的时间安排学生进行听抄练习。这是对学生精听能力的一个训练和提高。选材的内容最好是速度稍慢的听力材料(如美国之音慢速英语中),另外还有一些趣味小短文等等,都是不错的听抄材料。   2.准备与课文内容有密切关联的课外材料,使得学生可以从多侧面多角度深层次的`解课文内容。比如在《新视野大学英语听说教程》中有一章节是介绍MONARCH BUTTERFLY(帝王蝶),这对学生来说是比较陌生的内容,老师这时候可以选择NG(国家地理频道)介绍帝王蝶的资料片来补充,该资料声影并茂,可以形象地帮助学生理解课文。   3.如果课文内容过于简单,或者听力课还有多余时间的话,不妨为学生选择一些内容有趣、语言清晰规范的材料来使课堂更生动风趣。如介绍一些卡通片、《李阳疯狂英语听力》、DISCOVERY频道许多知识性的英文视频等等。但在为学生选择这些材料的时候,要注意难易度的把握,一般要提供英文的原文,但不提供中文字幕。否则的话会导致学生依靠中文字幕去理解视频和听力的内容,而非真正地提高听力。   4.准备一些新闻听力的内容(如CNN,NPR,BBC,VOA等)作为课后的练习和补充。英语学习是个渐进过程,而课堂的时间是有限的,因此有必要为学生准备丰富的听力资源。新闻听力每日更新,资源丰富,可以成为学生课后的有益补充,使他们的听力学习更加主动。   5.如果考试临近,尤其当重大考试(如四六级考试)快要进行的时候,还应对听力课程的内容有所调整,不要还是按步就班,而应考虑到学生的实际需求,为他们准备历年的听力考试真题以及模拟题,帮助学生准备考试。   三、结语   笔者在担任的南方医科大学20xx级临床专业两个班的教学中,分别运用了不同的听力材料策略。这两个班分成对照班(临床专业一部分,共115人)和课外听力材料运用班(临床专业一部分,共123人)。其中对照班的主要授课内容为教材的内容,而课外听力材料运用班则在使用固定听力教材的基础上,运用了课外听力材料的策略。   20xx年1月(学期结束时),用自制的调查问卷对两个班的学生进行调查问卷。关于问卷的第一题(1.你对现在的听力课的满意程度如何?),对照组的得分是5.2,而课外听力材料班的得分为8.1,经统计学比较,两者有明显的差异性(P   笔者相信:为了满足学生不断提升的听力需求和全方面地提高课堂教学质量,有必要在课堂中合理地运用课外听力材料;同时恰当的课外听力材料还是课文内容的有益补充和不可或缺的美妙调料。   【参考文献】   [1]王铭玉,贾梁豫.外语教学论[M].合肥:安徽人民出版社,1999.
